About the Club

Our Community Trust is a registered charity that provides support to the Community within the local area. We use the positive promotion of the great game of football to ensure high quality and accessible opportunities for members of our community to positively improve, develop and change their lives for the better whilst bringing fun and enjoyment to everything we do.

1               The organisation’s purposes are:

1.1          The advancement of public participation in sport and the provision of recreational facilities, coaching, training and volunteering opportunities, primarily related to association football.

1.2          The advancement of the art, heritage, culture and science through the restoration and preservation of the category A-listed stand at Netherdale 3G Arena.

Our organisation has an established reputation as a family friendly club with a proud record of community involvement and engagement. The Community Trust will provide an opportunity to build and develop our community activities ensuring that we remain a positive social force in Galashiels and in the wider Borders area. We believe that our future success both on and off the field is dependent on us developing and deepening our existing roots in the local community by working with all of the people of Galashiels, local charities, businesses and partner organisations.

GFRFC Walking Football

The Gala Fairydean Rovers Walking Football Team is part of the newly established Community Trust at Netherdale which encompasses Amateur, Walking, Para, Women’s and Girls football as well as the hundreds of youths and junior players involved with the GFR Academy.

The Walking Team recently celebrated their sixth successive season involved with GFR after they started life as part of a Scottish Border Council Community Capacity Building initiative. Walking Football is a slowed down version of the beautiful game designed to keep the Over 50’s playing football and remaining healthy and active. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Recent studies have suggested that Walking Football brings obvious health benefits but in addition helps end social isolation and brings friendships and camaraderie to a particularly vulnerable group, the over 50’s. The Gala team caters for all abilities from those who just want a kick-about with a group of friends up to those who like the competitive side of the sport. As well as providing up to three sessions each week, the team has competed in tournaments across the country and even in Europe.
